2024: What Does it Mean to be Free? Reflections on Freedom, Flourishing, and Moral Imagination by Angel Adams Parham, Ph.D.
What does it really mean to be free? So often, we think of freedom as being able to do whatever we want to do. This conception of freedom is so pervasive, that many believe that the ability to lead a satisfying life is characterized by being “free” to do what we want in order to create the kind of self we envision to be best and most successful. But there are other ideas of freedom that invite us to consider how being committed to others, rooted in tradition, and respectful of well-considered boundaries may actually grant us greater freedom than moving through the world with few commitments, attachments, or restrictions. To think and live in this counter-cultural way requires great moral imagination—a way of looking beyond what our culture tells us is best, to seek out wisdom and beauty in under-explored places.
This year's talk features our distinguished guest speaker, Angel Adams Parham, author of The Black Intellectual Tradition: Reading Freedom in Classical Literature.
Dr. Parham is Associate Professor of Sociology and senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. She works in the area of historical sociology, engaging in research and writing that examines the past in order to better understand how to live well in the present and envision wisely for the future.
